North East: Clubhouse that caused disastrous debt to be sold
Lottery-funding contributed £670,000 to clubhouse redevelopment.
A clubhouse which cost almost £1 million to build is to be transformed into a bungalow after causing the financial collapse of its course.
The 104-year-old Silsden club was able to build the clubhouse in 2001 thanks to a £670,000 National Lottery grant but also contributed £200,000 to the development.
This led the club falling into debt, which it has not been able to escape, and plans have now been submitted that would see the clubhouse converted into an exclusive four-bedroom bungalow.
