East Midlands: Gordon may be oldest single-handicapper
A Suffolk golfer believes he is the oldest single-figure handicap golfer in the country.
Retired Army captain Gordan Gibbs, 90, who plays his golf at Aldeburgh, plays off a handicap of nine despite never having had a single golf lesson in his life.
Gibbs, who said he always shoots under his age, said there’s no secret to his success.
Speaking to the Ipswich Star he said: “I just put it down and hit it. I’ve always had a fairly tidy short game, but I can’t hit it far enough these days.”
At his peak Gibbs was a scratch golfer and served as Suffolk county captain in the 1970s, winning numerous competitions and sinking eight holes-in-one over his career.
‘I try to play four times a week in the geriatric foursomes’ One of his best recent rounds was a 73 he shot in 2012, just a year after he suffered a heart attack on the Aldeburgh course.
“I try to play three or four times a week in what I call the geriatric foursomes,” he said. “Golf is a good bit of exercise, it keeps you going and I’ll just try to play for as long as I can.”
