Scotland: Whinhill wins Muirshiel Trophy league
Greenock’s Whinhill has won the Muirshiel Trophy League for the fourth year running.
The league is contested by scratch teams from Gleddoch, Gourock, Port Glasgow and Whinhill.
With all of Whinhill’s nine-man squad being under the age of 50, and the majority of the squad being products of the club’s junior section, it’s likely that the club’s purple patch will continue for the foreseeable future.
A spokesperson for Whinhill thanked mens’ captain John Donald and his team for their efforts in representing the club in the league and thanked Gleddoch, Gourock and Port Glasgow for participating in an enjoyable league.
The competition had a new format in 2014 with each team having a home game that consisted of having two players from each club playing against the other three clubs at the same course on a single evening.
By winning 15.5 of 18 available points in the first three matches, Whinhill secured the league with a match to spare.
The Whinhill mens’ team was Gareth Caldwell, John Donald, Stephen Donald, Paul Jones, Andrew McDonald, Michael McLennon, Anton O’Donnell, Jamie, Sinnamon and Stephen Wilson.
