VIDEO: NCG guide to Royal Liverpool Hole 16
Hole 16th – Field
576 yards, par 5
What the players face:
The beginning of Hoylake’s famous closing stretch and an obvious birdie – or even an eagle – chance. This par 5 is more frequently played downwind than it is into the breeze.
How to play it:
This is a real chance to make up ground but the bunkers simply must be avoided off the tee so some players will choose to throttle back with their drives and accept a longer shot in, from around 280 yards, in the knowledge it is still within range in two downwind.
Expect to see plenty of balls run off the back and into a small gully.
Did you know:
There is a grassy hollow just short and right of the green that is known as Farrar’s Folly after a former secretary. It’s a tricky up and down from here.
