Open Golf: The best quotes from the third round

All the best lines from day three at the 142nd Open Championship

Richard Sterne (75-75-68)I found it obviously a lot better today. The greens were more receptive and the flag positions were a lot more accessible, perhaps that’s because the greens are not as crusty as they were the first day. And just receptive in a way so you could at least attack them on certain holes. And the pace of the greens were much friendlier speed.”

Richie Ramsay (76-74-72) “Accommodations for the week, you have to have it for seven nights. So being a Scottishman, obviously, I didn’t really want to have it for the full seven nights, but now I’ve got the use of it. I was much pleased with that as to get in the tournament’.”

Sergio Garcia (75-73-68) I think we both respect each other [he and Harrington]. We seemed to be a little bit slow out there today, but other than that it was fine.”

Johnson Wagner (73-72-73) “I’m as against slow play as anybody, and I respect everything everybody is doing, but, man, the kid was playing great today. We played the Masters together last year and he’s a great kid, and I think it’s terrible that he got penalized. Hopefully he’ll go out tomorrow and rip it up and put himself this contention again, but I think it’s terrible.”

Graeme McDowell (75-71-73)  “You get into these bunkers, and you’re just hoping to have a swing. You’re hoping to have a stance. It’s tough. That’s my only complaint about the golf course, I think the rest of it is very fair. Golf gets rewarded and bad golf gets punished. It’s a hell of a test of golf. I’m looking forward to another 18 holes.”

Hunter Mahan (72-72-68) I think you can go out and win a Major without anything, without any sort of successes. Does it help? I think it does. Because I think it can be overwhelming at times. Being in the first or second, last groups there, to have everybody following you and seeing all the scores and everything, it can be overwhelming. But there’s no rules in this game, you can kind of do whatever you want.”

Adam Scott (71-72-70) I feel like I’ve got, well, nothing really to lose tomorrow and Majors to gain. So that’s certainly a nice feeling, whereas before in some ways it was getting to the point where you’re hoping it was going to happen tomorrow. It is absolutely a weight off your shoulders to have the first one. I can’t tell you anything other than that.”

Phil Mickelson (69-74-72) I feel like the only hole that is kind of a — I don’t want to say gimme birdie, but a hole you should birdie is No. 9 and everything else you’ve got to make a 20, 30-footer. You’re very lucky if you hit it close. I hit a shot close on No. 2, that had a tap-in birdie. But, yeah, I mean it was — you just need an element of luck. You’re going to have to make 20, 30-footers. I didn’t make really any today.”

Tiger Woods (69-71-72) I felt like I played well today, I really did. And I had a couple opportunities to make a couple of putts, I just didn’t do it. Caught a couple of weird bounces out there, which is normal. But all in all it was a good solid day. I really played well. And tomorrow hopefully I can play just a little bit better, and make a couple more putts.”
