Let the lie dictate you

The importance of assessing how the ball is sitting

Ball position

Plenty is always talked about with the swing but the correct ball position is also essential. For the driver it is forward to encourage hitting on the upswing, a fairway wood at the apex of the swing and slightly on the downswing for the irons. Where do hybrids fit in? Off the fairway you should have the ball just forward of the middle of the stance but you should still be looking to make a crisp, downward strike while trusting the versatility of the club to get the ball in the air.

Rough stuff

If your ball is in a poor lie or sat down in the rough you need to make some adjustments. Your first priority is to get into the back of the ball so set yourself up with it in the middle of your stance. This will help you to strike down on and drive through the ball. With this shot you won’t see the ball come out high so play for plenty of run.

Upwardly mobile

If your ball has finished in a good lie, position it further forward. Here we want to be sweeping the ball away and to help a really solid contact it may help to grip down the club which will restrict the backswing and hinge the wrists a little earlier. But remember, the ball flight will be a lot higher from this type of lie so you can expect a lot more carry.
