THE BASICS: Get the fundamentals right

Going back to basics on the greens

Strike it rich

To make a better strike, and therefore hole more putts, it is essential that you get your ball position correct. This will ensure the ball gets rolling quickly off the putter face, limits skid and ball bounce and promotes a smoother roll.

On the up

To help the putter meet the ball slightly on the upswing make sure that the ball is one putter's width inside your left heel, this will be just forward of centre.

Long back, short through

One of the biggest faults for the club player putting is to take too long a backswing and then decelerate – the result is an ugly stroke and makes it almost impossible to gauge any distance and to keep the putter on line.

Mirror the set-up

What you should be looking to achieve is a smooth, pendulum-like motion with the impact position identical to the set-up. The key to a good roll and successful distance control is to have a backswing which is shorter than the followthrough.
