Bang on perfect
Quite simply a superb set-up, everything is so correct from the athleticism in his feet and knee flex, to the precise bend from his hips allowing his arms to hang naturally down. Note how we can see just a tiny bit of his left forearm above his right elbow – perfection. The whole posture culminates in a great head position, in line with his spine and chin clear of his chest, ready for action.
From the armpit
The most perfect one-piece takeaway. He turns from his left armpit, shoulders leading, while a split second later his hips begin to respond to this turn. This is accompanied by his knees moving in sympathy allowing a smooth weight transfer to his right side. Finally note that there is no wrist hinge evident promoting a smooth arc, maintaining maximum width.
More than acceptable
Please note how steady Luke’s body is, great poise and balance. His wrists are now hinged and the club shaft, although not perfectly laying on the plane angle, is in a most acceptable position. Anyway, the ball does not care if the club is exactly on plane in the backswing!
A touch closed
Still perfect balance, left knee pointing in towards the ball as his weight is mostly on his right leg. Luke’s right forearm is just about parallel to his spine angle, very neat and simple. The only slightly unusual aspect is that his right wrist is bent back on itself. This results in pulling the left wrist into a mildly bowed position which, in turn, sets the clubface a touch closed, looking a little up towards the sky.
Still behind it
A great position from which to deliver a powerful square blow. Right heel just leaving the ground but still the bulk of his body is well behind the ball. The wrists maintain their hinge and his right elbow is nicely bent, we can almost feel the pent-up power. The club is on a perfect angle, just about parallel to the ground and it points parallel to where Luke’s target line is, simply spot on.
Superb wrist roll
Wow, what a release. Look how he has straightened both arms, the clubhead chasing the ball away towards his target as a result of the exquisite roll of his forearms. This is combined with maintenance of a perfect spine angle and superb balance. If you, dear readers, can go some way to emulating this in 2012 your handicaps will undoubtedly fall.
