Gary Alliss breaks down Jim's moves

Weight on the left side

Much has been written about Jim’s unorthodox swing but I intend to stick very closely to exactly what we can see and learn from these images alone. An orthodox set-up position but note how low his wrists are and how close his hands are to his thighs. He also has more weight on his left side.

No tops here

If a club player set up like this they’d immediately break the wrists and lift the club steeply with little weight transfer or turn, meaning tops and slices.

All moving together

Jim’s takeaway is as you’d expect – hands, arms and club all moving away along with his left shoulder.

Little transfer

The legacy of his set-up is his shoulders turning on a steeper than normal angle and there is less weight transfer to his right side than most top players.

Left knee flexed

His backswing means his left knee has to stay very flexed and his right drives quicker across so his hips are clear.

Back to the inside

The club travels from inside to straight along his target line before returning to the inside. He delays delivery of the clubhead to the ball.

Double overlap

Notice his double overlap grip, this helps prevent over-releasing and closing the clubface in this most unorthodox of tour swings.
