Keeping your flight down

How to control your ball flight

Flight of fancy

Being able to control your ball flight will really benefit your game. Any shot played into the wind should be kept low while at most links courses most of the bunkers are to the side of the greens so an ability to land it short of the flag and run one up is a real asset. The majority of golfers don’t hit down on the ball enough.

Lose the loft

There are various ways to keep the ball low – like swinging on a shallower angle or taking an extra club and gripping down. The most common technique is to move the ball back in the stance to take loft off the club.

Swing easy

Make sure the clubface remains square to the target. Remember to make a normal turn and hold the ‘set position’ longer than usual and don’t release your hands through impact. Some people imagine that by hitting the ball harder it will produce a low, boring shot. The opposite is the case – so swing easy.
