First impressions
I was something of an early adopter when it comes to Galvin Green and I have never found another golf apparel brand to match them. It’s been a few years since I last saw one of their latest range of Gore-Tex waterproof jackets and I am struck by how the styling has evolved. Gone are those trademark big blocks of bold colours and the in-your-face branding. Retained are the countless bits of detail and technical wizardry that make playing in the toughest conditions that little bit more palatable.
A jacket like this can make the difference between your swing getting tighter and tighter as your waterproofs get heavier and heavier – drop by drop. It can help you to line up and strike your putts without that irritating bunching of material as you bend down.
It is the difference between merely surviving in bad weather and thriving.
Let’s deal with some of the technical details. Galvin Green describe the Albert as “the ultimate lined full-zip golf jacket in 100% waterproof Gore-Tex stretch fabric.”
It features a “mesh lining for added warmth, breathability and moisture management”.
As for the fit, “the stretch gives you full freedom of movement” while it is “packed with features such as shaped sleeves, front pockets, two inner pockets to make you feel comfortable on and off the golf course”.
Some Galvin jackets are like F1 cars in that they have stripped away all except the performance elements. With the Albert, though, you get the practical benefits of some pockets, additional warmth from the lining and a generally more versatile jacket.
On-course testing
I wore the Galvin Green Albert waterproof jacket for the first time on a very cold but sunny winter’s day. The great thing is that this is much more than just a waterproof jacket. You could quite happily wear it throughout the winter months as it doubles up as an outer layer.
Unlike nearly all other waterproof jackets, there is nothing to hamper you when you are swinging. In fact, I had forgotten I had it on after the 1st hole and only realised I was still wearing it when the round was finished.
This is a jacket that you will want to get maximum wear from and you will find it is just as suitable to wear off the course as you go about your daily business as it is when tackling a links on a squally day. It does help that the branding is more subtle these days with Galvin Green.
It’s the kind of garment that you want to keep in your bag for emergencies – but also one that is handy to have in your boot and also on the peg next to the door as you’ll be reaching for it for a variety of purposes.
The 19th hole
The Galvin Green Albert jacket is undoubtedly worth the investment if you play plenty of golf all year round. And also if you will get some wear out of it away from the course too. You won’t regret this purchase. You can have the total confidence in the product and the brand when it comes to the technical performance and waterproofness. And, believe me, if you haven’t worn a Galvin Green jacket before, you won’t believe how good they are to swing in.
