The Open: Everything you need to know about the 151st Open Championship at Hoylake

The world’s oldest major is going to Royal Liverpool. Here are all the details you need ahead of the 151st Championship

The Open Championship. It’s the final major of the year, the oldest of them all, and, for many, the most eagerly anticipated too.

There is a magic about the Open Championship and golf’s must-watch event is now so popular you have to win a ticket lottery to get a prized ticket.

After the celebrations of last year’s 150th championship at St Andrews, it now moves on to Royal Liverpool and the wonderful links at Hoylake.

It’s the 13th time the venerable club has staged the event. It was first held in 1897 when it was won by Harold Hilton. The most recent was in 2014 when the Claret Jug was claimed by Rory McIlroy.

In between, some of golf’s most storied names have negotiated the famous Merseyside turf and come out on top. JH Taylor on his fifth Open at Hoylake in 1913 and Walter Hagen his second in 1924.

Bobby Jones’ win in 1930, on his way to completing the Grand Slam, was so famous a portrait of the greatest amateur ever to play the game hangs in the Hoylake clubhouse.

Peter Thomson also claimed one of his five Claret Jugs at Royal Liverpool. It is an arena that breeds proper golfers and those most fitting of the title ‘Champion Golfer of the Year’.
