Seve Week: Views from his American rivals

Americans who faced Seve in Ryder Cups and Majors offers their memories

Corey Pavin

Ryder Cup opponent 91-95

HE could work the ball both ways but he had so much power as well.

In ‘83 I won the German Open and he was second and I’m sure he had no idea who the heck I was.

He offered his congratulations... and added ‘next time it will be different’. At the Lancome he won and I was second and he said ‘now we’re even’.

In the Ryder Cup he was always the emotional centre of the team and he and Jose Maria were  formidable. You always knew, however he was playing, you were in for a match.

In 1995 he played Tom Lehman and Tom asked me for advice on how to play him. I told him to just hit fairways and greens and don’t pay attention to anything he is doing, he will be getting it up and down and making putts from everywhere and you’ll think you should be doing better.

Tom won the match but Seve did some amazing things that day and his fight and fortitude was incredible – that is maybe how he kept the cancer at bay for so long. He was a real fighter.
I almost think he played better when he hit it sideways as it got the adrenaline flowing more. He was just a wonderful guy.

Mark O’Meara

Ryder Cups in 85, 89 & 91

I HAVE never met anyone so intense, passionate and creative. I knew it would be tough when he was captain at Valderrama and it was.

Lanny Wadkins and I played against him and Manuel Pinero at The Belfry in 1985. There wasn’t a lot of talking, I can tell you, he wanted to grab you by the throat and take you down.

I’m OK with that; he was more intense than I am as a human being but he was great and we miss him, particularly at the Masters Champions Dinner.

Craig Stadler

Ryder Cups in 83 and 85

HE was the ultimate competitor. You could see it in his eyes too, he was some guy.

Some of the things he did were incredible and I loved getting paired with him as you never knew what you were going to get.

I almost think he played better when he hit it sideways as it got the adrenaline flowing more. He was just a wonderful guy.
