Preview of 2012: Major venues
In No.3 on our 2012 guide, we look ahead to the Major venues
3 What do the Majors hold for us?
IF you are looking for the likes of Westwood and Donald to break through at this year’s US Open then the omens don’t look great.
The Olympic Club’s roll call of winners are Jack Fleck, Billy Casper, Scott Simpson and Lee Janzen. Expect tilting fairways and late nights – San Francisco being on the west coast.
Royal Lytham and St Annes, and its vast amount of bunkers is a different matter with Seve (twice), Player, Jacklin, Thomson, Locke and Jones all having won here.
Much will rightly be made of Seve’s brilliance and, in particular, the win over the two Nicks, Price and Faldo. Otherwise Britain will be preparing itself for the Olympics which begin the following week.
And then to Kiawah Island for its Major debut. Best known for holding the 1991 Ryder Cup, less well known is it was the stage for the movie The Legend of Bagger Vance.
It has also staged a pair of World Cups and, if you’re looking for more omens, then Ireland (Harrington & McGinley) took the 1997 version while South Africa (Immelman & Sabbatini) won here in 2003.
