WATERPROOF SUITS
If you want to stay dry this winter in style, then you will need to invest in a high-quality waterproof suit. To help you buy with confidence, we have reviewed all the leading models on the market

About the test We asked all the leading manufacturers to send their leading waterproof suits in. Key criteria included: how the suit fitted; how easy it was to put on and take off; what additional features it had; how comfortable it was to swing in; how much noise it made; how bulky it was; how it coped in the rain
gold Galvin Green
Ashford/Alf
Gore-Tex membrane for durable wind and water protection
Highly breathable material releases excess heat and moisture
SRP: £249 (Ashford jacket); £199 (Alf trousers)
www.galvingreen.com
01932 569 888

Our verdict MUCH like with Titleist and the Pro V1 ball, when Galvin Green first brought suits like this to the UK market they were light years ahead of the competition. As the years have passed, however, so others have inevitably caught up and adapted some of the best features. But we still feel that Galvin suits are quite simply the best on the market. Their reputation for quality, performance, reliability and style is second to none and that is why so many of us are happy to spend a substantial amount of money on investing in one of their suits.
gold Sunice
Ultimate Gore-Tex
Gore-Tex technology offers unrivalled weather protection
Ultra-quiet and soft hand feel, waterproof stretch inserts and elbow articulation for full range of motion
SRP: £249 (jacket); £149 (trousers)
www.sunice.com
08701 666 555

Our verdict SUNICE are renowned for their high quality, top-performing suits, and the Ultimate Gore-Tex, from their super-premium Hurricane Collection, is no different. With a hefty price tag of £400 for the full package, the technologies (not least the Gore-Tex fabric) and design certainly do not come cheap, but the features it packs are so high-end that they will last a long time and perform in all types of weather.
It looks stunning, too, and so many will consider it well worth the investment. It looks really sharp and is guaranteed to keep you dry in even the heaviest and most persistent rain. While extra touches like the in-pocket towel to dry your hands, or clean your ball, show how much thought has gone into this suit.
bronze Nike
Storm Fit
Waterproof, windproof and very breathable, the Nike Storm Fit suit is a great option in all weather conditions
SRP: £100 (jacket); £70 (trousers)
www.nikegolfeurope.com
0800 056 1640

Our verdict ONE of the biggest problems golfers find with waterproof suits is restricted swings and discomfort. But the Nike Storm Fit has been designed to offer great weather protection with minimum weight. The result is a comfortable garment that shields you from the elements in style. It comes in a variety of striking colours, too, and we loved how it fitted. It doesn’t make much noise and it’s a suit you can comfortably swing in.
It’s also available at a very competitive price – comfortably less than half of the other two prize-winning suits. Only you know what you are prepared to pay for a waterproof suit but, for the money, we don’t think you will do much better than this.
recommended Footjoy
DryJoys Tour Collection
With tour-proven rain protection, high-quality breathability and maximum comfort, the DryJoys Tour offers the ultimate defence
Trousers are designed to function superbly in any conditions
SRP: £115 (rain shirt); £120 (trousers)
www.footjoy.co.uk
01480 301 114

Our verdict FOOTJOY waterproofs are invariably smart but we think this Tour Collection is more than just a pretty face. The fit is excellent – thanks to the half-zip that prevents the jacket getting in your way when putting, the ability to draw the waist in and the velcro pads on the cuffs.
Each of these features makes this suit easier to play in – and FootJoy loyalists will doubtless approve of such improvements.

recommended Galvin Green
Arn/August
Laminated Gore-Tex Paclite membrane for durable wind and water protection
Highly breathable material that enables the release of excess heat and moisture – ultra-light and ultra-packable
SRP: £239 (jacket); £199 (trousers)
www.galvingreen.com
01932 569 888

Our verdict IF you are looking for a suit that can be packed away into the smallest space and weighs next to nothing, yet offers no compromise whatsoever in terms of performance, then this is the suit for you. It’s a fantastically versatile jacket, ideal on and off the course for when you are on the move. It should be made clear that PacLite is not designed to keep you warm – Galvin Green recommend you combine it with a garment from their warm-layer Insula collection – and the PacLite fabric is quite ‘noisy’ to swing in.
recommended Cross
Pro suit
Stretch mesh lining and pre-shaped sleeves offer extra fit and comfort
Fleece-lined front pockets keep hands warm while adjustable drawstrings add to fit
SRP: £150 (pullover); £110 (trousers)
www.cross.eu 00353 146 28 111

Our verdict WITH technology and style in equal measure, Cross’s Pro suit was a real hit. It fits very well and therefore does not have much excess fabric to contend with when putting, and the stretchy material prevents your swing from being hindered. Cross are originally a ski clothing manufacturer – and you can really tell.
It is stylish, comfortable and unrestricting and is packed full of technology to keep the rain at bay. We would recommend buying a size larger than usual unless you are a toned athlete because the Scandinavian fit can otherwise seem a little tight.
recommended Under Armour
Armourstorm
Coldgear thermal panels keep heat in where it needs to be, while a four-way stretch material gives a tight fit
SRP: £160 (jacket); £140 (trousers)
www.underarmour.com
0080 082 766 871

Our verdict UNDER ARMOUR are still new kids on the golfing block but their first venture into waterproofs suggests they have much to offer. We think this is the most credible threat to Gore-Tex’s dominance yet – Under Armour claim this suit offers all the breathability benefits with greater freedom of movement and less noise when you move in it. Certainly, the material stretches easily for a snug, comfortable fit and the coldgear thermal pads offer heat where your body needs it.It also looks great and the price is competitive too.
Adidas
Climaproof Storm
SRP: £169.99 (jacket); £99.99 (trousers)
www.adidasgolf.com 08003 894 292

+ Hugs the figure in all the right places, stretches with the body and repels water with the best of them
- The fit is snug – so consider getting a size bigger. The overall look may appeal more to the younger market
Peak Performance
Golf Lite Gore-Tex Jacket
SRP: £195 (jacket)
www.peakperformance.com 08003 898 655

+ It is packed with great technology and looks absolutely superb. It also fits very snugly
- The modern looks and tight, athletic fit will not appeal to all golfers – especially those with a sizeable mid-section!
ProQuip
TourFlex
SRP: £150 (jacket); £100 (trousers)
www.proquipgolf.com 01620 892 219

+ It looks great, is exceptionally comfortable and is full of technology which protects you from the elements
- Although this is undoubtedly an excellent suit, the Tourflex’s material can bunch a little when putting
Kartel
G2
SRP: £199.95 (suit)
www.kartel.ie
00353 1844 3900

+ The G2 suit is one of the best lookers in the entire test and the input from Padraig Harrington makes it even better
- Perfectly worthy – but lacks the exciting quality and luxury that the premium, more expensive suits have
Sunderland
Tournament
SRP: £180 (jacket); £120 (trousers)
www.sunderlandgolf.com 01415 725 222

+ Traditional but very light and comfortable to wear. It is also very nice to look at and fits well where it needs to
- Although it is quite snug fitting, there can still be quite a lot of material hanging down when putting
Footjoy
Sport Collection
SRP: £115 (jacket); £85 (trousers)
www.footjoy.co.uk 01480 301 114

+ Aimed at the younger, athletic golfer, this suit offers a snug fit and stylish look both on and off the course
- More traditional FootJoy fans will almost certainly prefer the Tour Collection style and colour schemes
Benross
Xtex
SRP: £79.99 (jacket); £49.99 (trousers)
www.benrossgolf.com 01932 821 200

+ The stretchy fabric prevents swing restrictions and the light weight makes it feel like you aren’t wearing a suit
- Unfortunately, the looks of the Xtex suit just don’t match the performance and technology
Ping
Absolute Zero
SRP: £130 (jacket); £90 (trousers)
www.pingcollection.co.uk
0161 492 2400

+ This suit is very comfortable, fits well and shields you from the rain effortlessly. It’s also really stylish
- The contemporary colours and fit might not appeal to the older, more traditional player
Glenmuir
Rain Bloc Stretch & Drive
SRP: £91.50 (jacket); £54.50 (trousers)
www.glenmuir.co.uk 01555 662 244

+ Fits well – it isn’t tight and it isn’t baggy. It is therefore very comfortable and offers plenty of ‘give’ when swinging
- It looks relatively plain and so may not suit the palettes of the younger, modern player
Zero Restriction
Tour Lite
SRP: £230 (jacket); £80 (trousers)
www.zerorestriction.com

+ The luxurious Motion Tuned technology allows the suit to move efficiently with your body to cut all swing restriction
- The limited colour options and plain designs will not be to everyone’s taste – especially the modern player
Stuburt
Helium Pro
SRP: £59.99 (jacket); £39.99 (trousers)
www.stuburt.com 01618 864 010

+ Fits very nicely and it looks good, too. At the price, it is a real bargain and would be ideal for the beginner
- At this price you can’t expect the highest quality – it’s not quite as comfortable to swing in as some premium suits
Forgan
Waterproof suit
SRP: £149.99 (suit)
www.forgan.co.uk 01527 598 388

+ Sharp looking, very good in tough conditions and superb value, this suit is a great option for anyone on a budget
- Lacks some of the refinements of other suits in the test – but then they cost considerably more!
Sunderland
Player
SRP: £115 (jacket); £55 (trousers)
www.sunderlandgolf.com 01415 725 222

+ A good looking suit that is comfortable, easy to wear and converts to a half-sleeve pullover very easily
- The conservative look will not be to everyone’s taste and the jacket can bunch when you bend over to putt
Cutter & Buck
Half zip
SRP: £90 (jacket); £60 (trousers)
www.cutterbuck.com 08009 012 976

+ This is one of the best-value suits on the market today and performs well above its £150 price tag
- It doesn’t fit as well as some of the more expensive suits and doesn’t quite match their performance either
Ram
Waterproof suit
SRP: £69.99 (suit)
www.ramgolf.co.uk 0161 886 4010

+ It looks good and is an absolute bargain at less than £70, making it perfect for an entry-level waterproof
- It’s definitely lacking the quality of the more expensive suits – but that’s exactly what you expect at this price tag
Mizuno
Impermalite
SRP: £140 (Full Zip jacket); £110 (trousers)
www.mizuno.com
0118 936 2100

+ This is a seriously stylish jacket with a strong technical story that Mizuno devotees will love to wear
- Doesn’t offer quite as much freedom of movement to swing in as some others on
