About the test We asked all the leading putter manufacturers to send a cross-section from their latest ranges. We then split these putters into three broad categories: Bladed models, Mallet-headed models and Concept models – by which we meant unconventional designs. Reviewing putters is, of course, incredibly subjective – and there is no such thing as ‘best’. But in each category we nominated our favourite model (regardless of price) and a further four that we strongly recommend.

Our verdict ALL things considered, the NCG test team could not find a better all-rounder than the Galway. It is a class act by any standards and as well made as any on test.
Mark: It is beautiful to look at, sits snugly and squarely behind the ball and is full of exceptional feel.
Dan: You can't fault its flawless, classy looks or its traditional, sleek lines, and we could all have easily mistaken it for a high-end model retailing at three times the price.
James: For such a simple, understated putter we thought the grip was slightly on the gaudy side. But this is more of a compliment to the rest of the putter rather than a genuine negative point.

Our verdict YES! are renowned for their stylish blades and half-mallets, but it was their flagship concept model that earned a unanimous victory. The Sandy might not be the prettiest at first glance but it quickly grew on us.
James: A great blend of simple looks and feel and the C-grooves really get the ball rolling true and end-over-end.
Mark: Unlike some of the other putters in this category, which I found to be overly light and inconsistent, this impressive putter felt very solid and stable through the ball.
Dan: I really like the way the head sits squarely behind the ball when you put it there at address. Couple this with the easy-to-line-up head shape and you have a real winner.

Our verdict UTTER class. From the way it sat so squarely behind the ball, to the way it felt at impact, we found it hard to fault the Scotty Cameron Fastback.
Yes, it comes along with a hefty price tag, but for the sheer quality and performance, you would almost certainly consider it money well spent. In our eyes, the definitive mallet.
Dan: The perfect example of what a compact mallet should be - it is expertly made, is exceptionally well balanced and sends the ball rolling true and consistently every time.
James: Solid and stable through the ball and the simple alignment aids make it very easy to align.

Our verdict ALTHOUGH it is usually reserved for the traditionalist better player, the Newport 2.6 is clearly appealing to any golfer who likes the finer things in life.
Mark: This sits really well at address and feels so solid through the stroke and into impact. The way the ball came off the face was a real positive. The centre shaft took a little bit of getting used to, but the idea does make sense to get you looking down the line of the putt and the results were impressive.

Mark: Genuinely unlucky to miss the top spot for me.
Dan: I like the great sound it produces at impact, and it's one of the easiest blades to line up of the selection we tested.
James: As with most Ping models, this featured great weight distribution and balance, and the feedback it produced was second to none

Our verdict ALTHOUGH there were more than a few qualms about the looks of this putter, no-one on test could argue with the performance the White Hot Tour produced.
James: I think the insert is one of the best in the review and the feel it offers generated excellent results.
Mark: The dark gold finish looks extremely classy and the compact head sat square behind the ball.
Dan: I did like this model but it's probably one for the better putter as mishits do not tend to get to the hole.

Our verdict DESPITE being a relatively new brand, Orka are fast earning a reputation for producing top-quality gear at great value price points. And their latest putter from their new SGS range – the P46 Type #1 – is a perfect example.
Mark: I loved the beautiful, timeless head shape which sits perfectly square behind the ball and the horizontal face grooves, which promote topspin.
Dan: It looks lovely and although the slightly springy face took me a while to get used to, I was soon judging the pace consistently well with this. A £200+ club for half the price.

Our verdict SIMPLICITY and class are the key to the Redwood's success and our testers felt that the uncomplicated, gadget-free looks and feel were only surpassed by the Scotty Cameron Fastback – and even then only just. A great putter which was very unlucky to miss out on the title.
Dan: The head sits perfectly square at address and I really like how the unconfusing alignment aid frames the ball before you begin your stroke. The feel is that perfect soft-yet-solid one that you want from a putter.
Mark: This putter is very well balanced and the satin finish really looks the part.

Our verdict TAYLORMADE are renowned for their game-improving concept putters, but their latest mallet really impressed our team of testers.
James: The dark grey finish looks superb and the feel off the face is great. Being picky, there is slightly too much bulk in the toe for me. That can make it look a tiny bit closed at address.
Mark: I like this putter but agree with James – and that was all that held a good putter back from being great.
Dan: It's amazingly good value. Nice headcover too!

Our verdict WITH a beautifully crafted, round head, and one of the best grips in the review, the Lizzy Plus was a slow burner for our team of testers. It didn't immediately catch the eye but the more we used it the more we liked it.
Mark: The interchangeable shaft system, which allows golfers to change the hosel to suit their taste, is a brilliant idea.
Dan: I was amazed how changing the shaft altered the appearance and feel of the entire putter. It does make it expensive, but it's still an excellent piece of invention from Yes.

Our verdict ANOTHER putter whose performance belied its looks. All agreed the insert generated a very good roll, but the bright blue finish, coupled with the copper-effect clubhead, wasn't to everyone’s liking.
James: The head shape seems a little unsymmetrical to me, but, to be fair, the performance makes up for it.
Dan: It is balanced very well and the notch in the back of the club, which helps to ensure your eyes are directly over the club, was very effective.
Mark: I'm not convinced by the looks but it does seem to get good results.

Our verdict LAST year's Spider was a real hit with us, and the latest version – the smaller-headed Itsy Bitsy – is even more impressive.
James: The Itsy Bitsy is easy to swing and the insert gets the ball rolling without skidding.
Dan: Although the head looks wacky and confusing at first glance, the outline actually forms a perfect square shape and is therefore incredibly easy to line-up.
Mark: A superb flat-stick which was very, very unlucky to miss out on top spot for me.

Our verdict FROM the very second you address the ball with the XG Hawk, you can understand why it has such a strong tour following.
Mark: The head sits behind the ball really nicely and the vivid alignment aid really works well.
James: It's well-weighted and therefore easy to swing back and through on line.
Dan: This is undoubtedly an excellent putter. The only thing I didn't like was the soft insert, which made me struggle to get the ball past the hole at times.

Our verdict THE idea behind the Heavy Putter is a great one – by putting extra weight into the club, your wrists can't move it alone and therefore your bigger muscles are forced to do the work.
James: There's no question the concept of a heavier putter helps to make a smoother, less jerky stroke – especially on shorter putts.
Dan: The head seems very stable and that makes it easy to line up behind the ball.
Mark: The heavy, thick grip was particularly effective on short, testing putts.

Our verdict SCOTTY CAMERON'S latest attempt at a game-improving concept is arguably his best yet. The Kombi not only looks very inviting to hit, but brings the brand's trademark silky feel to the masses. Excellent for the better player who wants to build up their confidence without losing feel
Dan: It's amazing how good the feel is considering its size.
James: The Kombi is confidence-inspiring at address and the alignment aids do their job well. The three-point weighting also had a good effect and made swinging the club back and through on line effortless.
