Changing life for Rory
Why McIlroy must be careful he does not burn himself out
Sandwiched (no pun intended!) among the biggest tournaments of the year for women was arguably the biggest championship of the year for the men – the Open at Royal St George’s.
I can’t help thinking Rory McIlroy’s decision not to play a competitive round between his US Open win and teeing it up at Sandwich a month later was a mistake.
I can only imagine what life must have been like for Rory since his US Open win.
Apart from all the demands on his time, his newly earned status has given him the opportunity to do virtually whatever he wants.
In recent times we’ve seen him attend Wimbledon, jet over to Hamburg for the David Haye against Vitali Klitschko fight and goodness knows what else.

It seems to me that trying to strike a balance between enjoying life and working hard at your chosen sport is extremely difficult but, with Chubby Chandler as his manager and world-class friends and stablemates alongside him Rory surely has a great chance to be one of the ones who get it right.
Let’s hope so, because I along with thousands of others believe he is one of the most talented players ever to have been born.
