BALLS. Probably the least understood aspect of golf equipment. This is hardly surprising - they are all the same size and shape, the technology is hidden within and as far as performance characteristics go, we are largely restricted to the information printed on the packaging. Even when it comes to what one does compared to the next, it is very difficult to give a definitive answer.
For example, let's say a new ball claims to go further. You try it out at your home course and, sure enough, on one hole you finish 10 yards past your usual spot.
But this could be down to any one of dozens of factors - a gust of wind, a firm bounce, a new driver, the temperature or an unusually sweet connection, to name a few.
So, along with a comprehensive review of all the balls on the market in 2009, we tested all of them on launch monitors to see if we could illustrate how one differs from the next. We hope you agree that the results are fascinating.
Whether you are a scratch man looking for a little more penetration on your tee-shots or a 28-handiapper wondering if investing in a Pro V1 is worthwhile, we hope you will find the following 11 pages essential reading.

This feature would not have been possible without the help of De Vere Oulton Hall, near Leeds, and the use of the technology in their Nike Academy.
Thanks in particular to head pro James Whitaker for his knowledge and patience. Thanks also to the range staff for their assistance in the unglamorous but crucial task of retrieving balls from the driving range.
