ONE TO WATCH: Danny Willett

Who is he? A 19-year old Englishman who, after a fine amateur career, has just turned pro

Where is he from? Rotherham, in South Yorkshire

What’s he done so far? Daniel, who made his pro debut at Celtic Manor in late May, sat atop the R&A’s amateur world rankings. He was a member of the 2007 GB&I Walker Cup side and has his name engraved on the English Amateur Championship trophy

What’s he like? The Yorkshireman has a mature head on his young shoulders. Calm, assured and always ready with a smile, he ticks all the right boxes when it comes to potential for a successful pro career

Strange but true: Willett chose to skip one of amateur golf’s most prestigious events, the Brabazon Trophy, to concentrate on his professional debut at Celtic Manor.

Best Part of game: Willett’s strength lies in his consistency. The Yorkshireman has proved himself to be a consistent winner with several worldwide victories and countless top 10s. His 19th place at the European Tour’s Andalucia Open in March showcased his talents further

Soundbite: “I loved playing amateur golf, but I’d done everything there was to do. The time was right for me to turn professional.”
