REVIEW: Strange champion

IT was the week when the Twenty Ten course at Celtic Manor, designed exclusively with the Ryder Cup in mind, was officially unveiled.

But the man who came out on top in its inaugural tournament will be nowhere near Celtic Manor come October 2010. Australia's Scott Strange became the 11th first-time winner on the European Tour this season and he did it in some style - holding off the in-form Robert Karlsson with a stunning and blemish-free closing round of 64.

That left him four shots ahead of the Swede, who in turn was four shots ahead of Raphael Jacquelin in third. Karlsson, now all but certain to qualify for Nick Faldo's team at Valhalla, has finished 3rd, 3rd, 3rd and runner-up in his past four tournaments.

At one point last Sunday he looked in with a chance of the elusive sub-60 round that is yet to be recorded on the European Tour. Six straight birdies around the turn would have set up a win almost any other week but Strange matched him blow for blow and didn't miss a shot until a wild drive up the last that he was lucky to find.

For NCG Fantasy Golf players, there were lots of big moves, with Karlsson, Jacquelin, Darren Clarke, Nick Dougherty, Jeev Milkha Singh, Ross McGowan and Ross Fisher all earning big points.

This week's counting event in Fantasy Golf will now be the Stanford St Jude Championship on the PGA Tour. We'll be previewing the event in full and letting you know which players are in action.
