REVIEW: Kim off the mark

Anthony Kim showed no signs of any nerves as he wrapped up his first win on the PGA Tour at the prestigious Wachovia Championship.

The youngster began the day four clear of Jason Bohn and Heath Slocum and then rattled off a birdie at the 1st before another three in four holes from the 5th to end any hopes of a final-day collapse.

He could then afford a mixed bag coming in with three bogeys and two birdies adding up to a three-under 69 and a five-shot victory. He also became the youngest winner on the tour for more than six years as well as setting the lowest four-round score for the event.

Playing partner Slocum was impressed by one of the brightest prospects in the game. "From the get-go, he put his foot on the gas and never let off. That was very, very impressive."

Kim, a Walker Cup player in 2005, tied for second in his first effort on the PGA Tour in 2006 and he admitted afterwards that the week could not have gone any better.

"It's been a long ride but it sure is worth it. I'm a little numb right now but that walk up 18 was the best feeling of my entire life. I had chills going up and down my spine. I knew my life was changing on the green when I was lining up that putt. All these emotions starting running through me and I realised what I had done.

"This is what I've been dreaming about my whole life, and fulfilling this dream is awesome."

The 22-year-old went on to say that a poor attitude in 2007, when he finished in 60th spot on the money list, had held him back particularly in terms of practising.

"I think I've grown up this week. I was an immature kid last year. If I'd won last year my practising would have gone down to even less, and there wasn't much to go down. It might have been the best thing for me, just to get slapped in the face and realise I can't win out there without practising and giving it my all and focusing on every shot. That did wonders for me this year."

Former Open champion Ben Curtis jumped up into second with a best-of-the-day 65 while England's Brian Davis and Ian Poulter tied for 25th.
