TRAVEL: Celtic risk rewarded

When a course has been designed and built specifically to host one of the biggest events on the sporting calendar expectations are understandably high. The early signs are that the Twenty Ten course at Celtic Manor will meet every one of them for the Ryder Cup in two years' time.

With water a significant feature on 10 holes there will certainly be drama and, with the plan to squeeze in the fairways at around the 320-yard mark and shave down the areas around the greens, this will be no big hitter's playground. Though, at 7,493 yards off the back tees, a par of 71 and with three par-fives measuring over 600 yards, length will be a considerable asset.

The beauty of the new lay-out is the way it gains momentum with every few holes. The first five are all new before eight of the old Wentwood Hills holes, all remodelled, come into play with two lakes featuring prominently. The 14th, a new and brilliant addition, is the signature hole and with good reason. Whether it is matchplay or strokeplay a decision to carry the lake at 270 yards must be made though the lay-up to the left appears equally as daunting. A narrow green, with more water, left awaits the approach.

The final hole to be taken from the Wentwood Hills model is the 15th which, with a 270-yard tee-shot over a collection of trees, can be driven though more water and two greenside bunkers sit left while thick rough protects anything too far right.

The finish is equally as spectacular, if as much for the magnificent views from the Usk Valley. The last will entice plenty to try and reach the putting surface though another closely-mown bank will see a few end up wet while others might eagle.

Even on a damp, dark day this was a superb experience. Plenty of us left with a hole in our ball collection though this was a tiny price to pay for four-and-a-half hours of  high enjoyment. Furthermore the clubhouse, general facilities and staff are outstanding making any overnight stay particularly relaxing.

The field at the Wales Open will be the first to feast their competitive eyes on this sensational £16m facility. Interestingly Open champion Padraig Harrington has included it in his schedule making an appearance at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth unlikely. We can expect plenty of glowing reports at the end of next month.
