REVIEW: More tartan joy for Boo
WHEN it comes to winner's jackets, the tartan garment that goes to the winner of the Verizon Heritage may not hold the same stature or appeal as it's green counterpart which is played for the week previous.
But that matters not a jot to Boo Weekley who now has two of those plaid jackets hanging in his wardrobe following the successful defence of his title: "I can wear one on Saturday, one on Sunday," he said.
Last year Weekley had to make consecutive chip ins on the last two holes to see off Ernie Els in a late Monday morning finish. This time around he also twice holed out from off the green in the final round, but in doing so
extended his lead to an unassailable position ahead of former champions Aaron Baddeley and Stewart Cink.
"It was a lot easier than last year, wasn't it?", Weekley was heard to say to his playing partner Anthony Kim on the 17th hole. That was on his way to a final round of 71 for a 15-under total and three shot cushion over second
placed Kim and Baddeley.
This victory also gave the man from the Florida pan handle a chance to enjoy his second PGA Tour victory to the full.
"I thought that you really won this when you stand there and pull the ball out of the hole and turn around to the crowd and say, 'You know, hey, I am the champ,'" Weekley said. "I chipped it in back to back last year, and I didn't get to stand there and turn to the crowd and do the fist pump."
And while he may not have celebrated in the way he really wanted to: "I wanted to do the moonwalk, the belly-roll." He did get the chance to complete a victory walk down the 18th with the crowd chanting “Boooo!"
Also with this win, Weekley joins an elite band of players to have successfully retained this title - Davis Love III and the late Payne Stewart.
And should you have backed the defending champion in your Summer Fantasy Golf team, you can be safe in the knowledge that you will be receiving 150 points for your wisdom.
It was also a good week other SFG players including Baddeley (T2), Kim (T2), Jim Furyk,(4), Cink (T7) and Camilo Villagas (T7) who all got themselves inside the top 10.
Don't forget to check out where you stand in the SFG leaderboard and look out for tomorrow's preview of next weekend's event and the players who will be in action.
