Miami nice for Ogilvy

Geoff Ogilvy ended a personal two-year drought and finally gave the world's best some hope as he ended Tiger Woods' seven-event winning run with a one-shot win in the WGC-CA Championship – he also rewarded his loyal followers with 200 Winter Fantasy Golf points.

The Australian resumed the fifth day with a two-shot advantage and parred the remaining nine holes of his final round to stay clear of Retief Goosen, Vijay Singh and Jim Furyk on 16-under.

There was one piece of luck, a chip-in at the short 13th, but otherwise his rock-solid play throughout the week was rewarded with just his fourth professional victory. He also becomes the third player to win more than one WGC event – he and Darren Clarke now have two, Tiger has a staggering 15.

Woods, who has topped the field all four times he has started in 2008, was out-of-sorts for much on the week on the greens but still came up just a couple of shots shy after three birdies in the last seven holes.

"I made too many mistakes this week. I had four three-putts, two terrible lies in bunkers and a photographer got me (by snapping early on hole nine).

"With all that, to finish only two back, I think that's a great sign. I don't think you guys or the fans really understand just how small the difference is between winning and not winning."

Ogilvy has not tasted victory since his stunning US Open win at Winged Foot and he was surprised that the likes of Furyk, Goosen, Singh and Woods were not able to apply more pressure.

"I didn't think nine pars would do it. Holding off the group is pretty nice. There was a fair bit of talent on the leaderboard. It's nice to come in in front of them, ending the Woods streak.

"My standard of play was best on Thursday (Ogilvy opened with a 65) and worst on Monday. I played so good on Thursday it was silly. Saturday was okay and by this morning I was hanging on a little bit but maybe that's what it feels like sometimes on the last nine holes of a tournament."

England's Graeme Storm tied for sixth with Steve Stricker and Nick O’Hern after rocketing up the field with a nine-under 63 on Saturday while NCG columnist Ross Fisher tied for 34th on his WGC debut.
