Scaling new heights
THERE are not many places in the world where you can stand on the tee of a first-class course and take in the spectacular views of three different countries. But Taba Heights is shaping up to be one of Egypt's premier resorts, thanks to a mix of luxurious hotels and a stunning golf course that has the Sinai Mountains as a dramatic backdrop.
Its 18 holes extend along the azure waters of the Red Sea and boast impressive panoramic views of the Saudi, Jordanian and Israeli coastlines as they snake their way through rocks and an arid landscape. The course was designed by American John Sanford, who has placed a total of five tees on each hole to provide a variety of challenges.
The first six holes gently ease their way towards the mountains before you begin your descent at the 7th towards the splashing waves of the sea. Then the back nine runs parallel to the beach, culminating in the last two holes – both of which are a flick from the water's edge.
A driving range and short game area top off the impressive facilities here, that also include a well-stocked pro shop and a bistro bar. In fact, European Tour professional David Lynn has made it his winter base, such is the high standard here. But the bar is raised again as the ultimate mix of luxury and style can be found in each of the four five-star beachfront hotels and a charming four-star boutique hotel.
The Hyatt Regency, Marriott, Intercontinental, Sofitel, and The Three Corners offer their high-class brands and state-of-the art amenities to make their guests' stays as comfortable and memorable as possible. Swimming pools, spas, gourmet cuisine and awe-inspiring views are only a few of the features offered across the board at Taba Heights if you prefer a slower pace of holiday.
However, the thrill seekers and adventurers are also taken care of in equal measure, with quadbiking, hiking, desert safaris and camel riding to keep you occupied on dry land, while windsurfing, sailing, wakeboarding, waterskiing, diving, parasailing and game fishing take place on the water.
The cultural treasures and religious sites of Egypt are also within a short distance and trips to the Giza Pyramids, Luxor, Petra and Abu Simbel can be arranged. It seems that Taba Heights has it all and with year-round sunshine it is always the perfect time to visit.
