A quick nine with Pablo Martin
1 You must have been surprised to win on the European Tour before you had even turned pro?
I was surprised to win so early but I felt comfortable with my game and thought I was good enough to win
2 You turned pro in May. Would you have done so even if you had not won in Portugal?
Yes. That was always the plan once I'd finished college in America. My first tournament was in Memphis on the PGA Tour and I also played in the US Open
3 Can you tell us about your relationship with Miguel Angel Jimenez?
Miguel and I are both from Malaga and I used to play with him when I was a junior. Most of the time he was away playing in tournaments but he helped whenever we were
4 What are the main differences between playing as an amateur and a pro?
It's not that different. You certainly play more golf. I think I've been pushing a little bit too hard on myself to play well, that's all. It is still the same game though. Apart from you get paid when you play well, which is more fun!
5 How much will we be seeing of you in Europe next season?
I'm looking forward to playing over here. I would never see myself as a guy that only plays on the PGA Tour. The quality of life is better over here
6 How did your time as an amateur help you prepare for life on tour?
I think amateur golf in college in the US is the best way you can get ready to be a pro but really there's nothing quite like it and at some point you just have to make the decision and then play well
7 What things have you learned since turning pro?
The way to prepare for tournaments. When I was an amateur I thought I was practising as hard as I could but now I know I wasn't. You have to work really hard to make sure you're ready on the 1st tee
8 It must have been a huge boost to your confidence that Nike wanted you to become a staff player?
Absolutely. What I like about Nike is that you really matter. You feel like you're part of a family. And in terms of the clubs, they are always trying to make them even better
9 What advice would you give to club players regarding their equipment?
Get a hybrid - at least one and maybe two or three. They are so useful and easy to use. They make the game much simpler, especially for high-handicappers
