Callaway Epic irons and hybrids are ‘most advanced to date’

Fans of the Epic drivers, it may be time to get your wallet out again. Equipment editor James Savage takes a look at the Epic irons and hybrids…

The Callaway Epic irons and hybrids are the brand’s most advanced and technologically precise to date.

That’s a bold claim from Callaway who have been making some of the best distance irons and hybrids in recent years.

There’s similar technologies here that we have seen in the recent Big Bertha OS and Steelhead XR irons and hybrids so where will the Epics sit within the range?

It’s no surprise to see Callaway attempting to build on the success of the Epic brand. The GBB Epic drivers have been the best-sellers so far in 2017.

Well we think the Epic irons are similar in size and style to the XR Steelhead irons with a slightly thinner topline and less off set than the Bertha OS.

They are definitely in the game-improvement bracket and are very much a distance iron.

For those who prefer something a little sleeker with less offset then the Callaway Epic Pro irons could be the way to go.

We feel the new Epic hybrids will have a fairly broad appeal as they appear to be bit more compact than the Steelhead and Bertha OS models.

In terms of the technology, the irons are the result of a no-expense spared project – just check out the suggested retail prices below – involving 70 Callaway design and engineering specialists.

The heads feature a high-grade, lightweight and strong cast-steel construction that stiffens the body, particularly in the top line and sole, allowing the face to take on more impact load.

Callaway say this will create faster ball speeds, more distance and enhanced performance.

The CG (centre of gravity) position in each head is precisely and individually managed via a new injection process using a dense, heavy, tungsten powder.

This allows the CG to be exactly positioned from club-to-club.

The crown on the Epic hybrids is the thinnest and lightest material – weighing just 5g – Callaway has ever used.

This weight saved is then re-distributed into strategic locations to lower the CG and promote high launch and add forgiveness.

We can’t wait to give them a hit and bring you the reviews. Stay tuned…
