Swing sequence: Rickie Fowler

NCG takes a closer look at Rickie Fowler’s swing and how his unique style has helped him to six career victories.

Rickie Fowler is one of the most popular players on tour but whilst that brings many benefits there are always people waiting in the wings to capitilise on his failures.

The 28-year-old was once dubbed one of the most overrated players in golf but responded by claiming The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass in fine style.

In 2016 Fowler went winless on the PGA Tour but stormed to victory at the European Tour’s Abu Dhabi Championship. The American’s most recent win, the Honda Classic, saw him close out a 54-hole lead for the first time in his career since turning pro in 2009.

Here, we dissect the moves that he and coach Butch Harmon have implemented into his swing that has made him one of the most exciting young players on the golfing scene with many tipping him for major success in the near future.

Fowler’s initial set-up is perfect with his spine straight and his knees flexed into a bent position. His arms are loose away from his body with a high grip.

During the midway point of his backswing the club and the ball are aligned in a perfect plane and as he reaches the top his upper body is fully turned allowing his hips free to rotate.

As he begins his downswing his weight is transferred onto his left side with his knees and hips moving towards his target. Rickie also continues to keep his back pointed towards his final aim point for as long as possible.

Once the club is moving down the plane towards the ball he keeps his swing path on line which allows him to maximise his power and acceleration into the ball which more often than not results in finding his his final target.
