Gleneagles to host historic golf event

The famous Scottish venue will hold the European Golf Team Championships next year, pitting men against women for the first time in a tour-sanctioned event.

Gleneagles has been named the host of the inaugural European Golf Team Championships in 2018 – an event that will see male and female professional golfers compete together for the first time.

The tournament, which will be part of the new multi-sport European Championships combining the existing championships of athletics, cycling, gymnastics, rowing and triathlon, will consist of a men’s and women’s event, as well as a mixed competition.

Glasgow will host the athletics, aquatics, cycling, gymnastics, rowing and triathlon, with the European Tour and LET-backed golf event taking place 50 miles north of the Scottish capital over Gleneagles Centenary course – the same 18 holes over which the 2014 Ryder Cup was played and is to host the 2019 Solheim Cup.

Gleneagles managing director Bernard Murphy said: “We’re proud to be associated with what will be a ground-breaking moment in sporting history.”

Around 3,000 athletes are expected to head to Scotland next year for the European Championships, which will take place from August 2-12.
