Is Rory McIlroy set to use Callaway driver and irons? According to a report from NoLayingUp.com he is.
The four-time major winner had already stated he was keen to test out as much equipment as possible in 2017 before penning a new deal.
McIlroy has already tested out the TaylorMade M2 woods and a Scotty Cameron putter since Nike announced they were no longer making clubs and balls.
Rory McIlroy set to use Callaway driver?
But for his first event of 2017 – the BMW South African Open – it has been reported he will game the new Callaway GBB Epic Sub Zero driver (video review coming on Jan 4).
NoLayingUp are also reporting he will play the Callaway Custom Apex MB irons, Titleist Vokey SM6 wedges, an Odyssey putter and a new Titleist Pro V1x ball.
McIlroy used the Pro V1x and Vokey wedges before he made the switch to Nike in 2013.
His first two majors – the 2011 US Open and 2012 USPGA – came using that combination of wedge and ball.
After extensive testing, McIlroy believes the Pro V1x works best with the new Callaway driver but claimed it doesn’t suit is Nike irons.
“I want to play the new Pro V1x ball and I know the Callaway driver works best with it,” he told NoLayingUp last year.
“I know my Nike irons don’t work as well with the Titleist ball because of the groove format. Too spinny and a loss of distance.”
McIlroy still insists he will not pen an official equipment deal in 2017 so expect more changes to the bag over the coming months.
Stay tuned for news and reviews on the new Callaway gear on January 4.
