Golf in Costa Daurada: Top tracks, sandy beaches & great views

The lowdown on Costa Daurada..

Golf in Costa Daurada

Golf in Costa Daurada involves discovering sandy beaches (this is the Golden Coast after all), gorgeous weather, great food – and, of course, plenty of golf.

Lying on the southern coast of Catalonia and just an hour’s drive south and west along the coast from the vibrant city of Barcelona, the Costa Daurada is home to some of the finest beaches in Spain.

The area takes its name from the soft, golden sand found along this stunning stretch of coastline. There are around 20 towns and villages in the Costa Daurada, as well as the bustling port city of Tarragona, providing an abundance of charming places for you to explore when you are not pounding the fairways.

Talking of fairways, the Costa Daurada is host to some glorious tracks. One of those is Lumine, a golfers’ paradise comprising three outstanding courses.

Each of the layouts poses a different challenge: the 18 holes of the Lakes Course wind round the Sèquia Major wetlands area, while the 9 holes in the Ruins Course run between Roman ruins dating from the second century. From the 18-hole Hills Course, you can view the quarries, pine groves and the sea.

Former World No 1 Greg Norman helped design Lumine’s three tracks and what a job he has done. Bonmont Golf Club lies at the foot of the Serra de Llaberia mountains and golfers can enjoy sweeping views over the Mediterranean from the course.

Bonmont was designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr and the par-72 course is a real challenge round. There are many obstacles to contend with on your way round, including several water hazards. Rest assured, you will need to be at your best to avoid landing in the drink at regular intervals.

Meanwhile, the Costa Dorada Golf Club combines complicated holes with water features, dog-legs, bunkers and links-style holes. It is the oldest course in the region, having opened in 1983, and full of character.

Beware of the clever use of trees which are used to guard approaches to many of the greens. Panoramica Golf, designed by Bernhard Langer, opened in 1995 and has been labelled ‘Little Valderrama’ because of its resemblance to the famous Ryder Cup course in southern Spain.

Set among olive trees, this course winds its way through gently rolling terrain and houses some treacherous water hazards. Panoramica’s practice facilities are equally exceptional should you feel the need to hone your skills in between rounds.

A double-sided driving range, several putting greens, pitching and chipping greens, practice bunkers and a charming par 3 course will ensure you won’t have any excuse for being unprepared for your round. Other top tracks in this breathtaking region include Aiguesverds and La Graiera.
