Report: USA in the driving seat heading into Sunday singles

The USA dominate the afternoon fourballs to regain the initiative...

The USA will take a three-point lead into tomorrow’s Ryder Cup singles matches after dominating the afternoon fourballs.

The Americans won three of the four matches at Hazeltine to halt Europe’s momentum from the previous two sessions.

USA will go into the singles with a 9.5-6.5 lead and need just five points to win the Ryder Cup.

Europe were one point behind the USA heading into the afternoon fourballs but now face an uphill task tomorrow.

Rory Mcllory and Thomas Pieters continued their formidable partnership in the Saturday fourball match against Brooks Koepka and Dustin Johnson, dispatching the American duo 3&1 to draw Europe level at 6.5-6.5.

It’s a double act that looks like it could be Europe’s new leading partnership for years to come in the Ryder Cup. And it was Pieters who won five crucial points in the session, holing several big putts.

However, the USA were back in the lead after Phil Mickelson and Matt Kuchar breezed to a 2&1 win over Martin Kaymer and Sergio Garcia.

Garcia won three of the holes for the Europeans but Kaymer disappointed again, with many critics questioning why Darren Clarke didn’t pick Rafa Cabrera Bello to play alongside Garcia after their impressive performance in the morning foursomes.

Danny Willett and Lee Westwood also came up short in their battle against J.B Holmes and Ryan Moore, losing 1 up. Westwood, who is in a poor patch of form, missed a short putt on the 18th to hand the tie to the American duo.

In the final pairing, Jordan Spieth and a sensational Patrick Reed breezed to a 2-1 victory over Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson.
