Equipment: Titleist 917 drivers and fairway woods launchedSeptember 8, 2016 Golf Equipment
Titleist’s commitment to proper custom-fitting is underlined as they unveil their 917 drivers and fairway woods, writes NCG’s equipment editor James Savage.
You’ll have no doubt seen them on tour, now the Titleist 917 drivers and fairway woods are coming to a pro shop near you.
The Titleist 917 driver has already notched up a major victory thanks to Jimmy Walker’s triumph at the PGA Championship but there’s all new technology on offer to benefit the club golfer.
It has been two years since the launch of the 915 range, which saw golfers of all abilities make the most of the game-changing technologies and classic looks on offer.
With 917, the brand say they have taken everything that was good about 915 but have raised the bar in helping golfers to get properly dialled in for optimum performance.
The main difference with 915 comes in the shape of SureFit CG adjustability in the sole of the driver and fairways.
Basically, SureFit CG allows the the clubs’ centre of gravity to be adjusted to help you achieve your desired shot-shape.
A cylindrical weight is applied in one of three positions – neutral, fade or draw. For example, the weight in the draw position sees more weight towards the heel which will speed up the toe and help you square the face over more easily.
There’s still the SureFit adjustability in the hosel which allows the loft and the face angle to be adjusted. But one of the benefits of SureFit CG is it can still promote a particular shot shape while keeping the face exactly square for those who desire that look at address.
Ball speed and forgiveness levels have also been improved along with a a meatier, more solid sound compared to 915.
The driver, with a grey crown in a finish Titleist call liquid slate, is again available in D2 or D3 heads with a D4 possibly being introduced at a later date.
With the new fairway woods we’ve also got SureFit CG and hosel adjustability and active recoil technology in the sole. One of the main differences is the fact they’ve filled in the channel which improves the sound and performance.
