Ross Fisher: How to hit better iron shots
2010 Ryder Cup star and five-time European Tour champion Ross Fisher reveals his top tips for hitting better iron shots.
TENSION-FREE SET-UP
I’m not going to focus on stance, ball position and so on – I want you to focus on one thing: getting rid of the tension from your arms. Focus on relaxing your shoulders – trust me, it will help.
HALFWAY BACK
We want a slow, smooth takeaway – not a jerky, nervous one – and if you’ve got your shoulders loose, that will help. Keep the clubface ‘looking’ at the ball as it moves beyond your back foot and before your wrists hinge.
EASY AT THE TOP
Keep your belt buckle looking at the ball (it helps to stop you swaying and adds a bit of power), and start the downswing smoothly from the ground up with the hips leading the upper body.
INTO IMPACT
You don’t want to be thinking about anything at this point – it’s a case of collecting the ball with the clubface as you swing through. And you know not to scoop the ball in the air: squeeze it between turf and clubhead.
