GB&I in command at Curtis Cup

A stunning day for GB&I has them on the brink of Curtis Cup victory

A commanding second day saw Great Britain & Ireland take charge at the Curtis Cup.

Captain Elaine Farquharson-Black’s team won five of the six points on offer to lead 8-4 with just the singles matches to go tomorrow at Dun Laoghaire, in Ireland.

After beginning the day tied at 3-3, GB&I took the morning foursomes 2-1 before completing a clean sweep of the fourballs to put themselves on the brink of a fabulous victory.

They now need to pick up only two and a half points from the eight remaining matches to regain the trophy they won at Nairn in 2012.

Bronte Law is on the verge of an unbeaten Curtis Cup after she teamed up with Olivia Mehaffey to dominate on day two.

The duo beat Bailey Tardy and Monica Vaughn 3&2 in the foursomes and then saw off Vaughn and Bethany Wu by the same scoreline in the afternoon.

Meghan MacLaren and Maria Dunne also enjoyed huge success, squeezing past Sierra Brooks and Andrea Lee 1 up in the morning before getting the better of Tardy and Mariel Galliano 3&2 in the fourballs.

After Leona Maguire and Charlotte Thomas were GB&I’s only reverse in the morning, they bounced back to crush Hannah O’Sullivan and Mika Lu 5&4 in a remarkable afternoon of golf. GB&I

“We came out strong this afternoon,” said Farquharson-Black. “I said before that I’ve been treating each series as three separate matches. I have always thought we could win all three matches. We were close on the first morning and this afternoon we managed to do it.

“We ended on a high this morning so I decided to keep the same pairings for the fourballs and it worked.

“Some of the golf out there was incredible. The message to the team is to go out and do it again tomorrow. We will enjoy the three points tonight and then regroup and stick to the game plan.

“Everybody has looked relaxed and happy all week and that’s what we will try to be tomorrow. It’s a nice position to be in but we have still to get the job done.”
