Soren Kjeldsen Q&A

Soren Kjeldsen Q&A: Who would make up his dream fourball?

The world according to Kjeldsen, including why Billy Connolly and Robin Williams would make his dream fourball

How did you first get into the game of golf?

When I was four years old my older brother and my older sister started playing so it was just a natural thing for them to bring their little brother on a weekend. When I got a little bit older my parents tried it a little bit but gave it up pretty quickly, so my brother and my sister are the reason why I play.

What is your best achievement to date as a professional?

That’s a tricky one. Obviously my four victories on the European Tour are massive for me. I am very proud of being out here for a long time, always keeping my card and sort of being in the best third or fourth of the tour most years.

But if I had to pick out one thing it would probably be my win at Valderrama in 08.

What are your goals for this season?

My main goal is to improve, that’s always my main goal. I don’t really have goals or certain things

I have to achieve, as in winning a tournament or qualifying for something. The two things I really look at is, one, improving and, two, I look at my scoring average.

If I keep shooting good numbers I think I will achieve want I want to achieve.

What would you say is the best part of your game?

It is definitely my short game. If I had to pick something out of my short game I would say wedge play. From probably 30 to 120 yards I feel like I am one of the best out here.

Who is your best friend on tour?

I wouldn’t like to pick one. I get on really well with all the young Danes who have come out. There is a really good group and we have a lot of fun.

What would be your dream fourball pairing?

I always said that if it was going to be the most fun round of my life I would like to play with Billy Connolly, Robin Williams, the comedian who is no longer with us, and Richard Pryor. I would like to play with those three. I think we would have a good time.

What is your favourite course on tour?

Apart from the Masters, which is the best tournament in the world, I would definitely go with the Le Golf National in Paris. I think it’s a beautiful course.

What do you like to do when you are not playing golf?

I have got three kids, so that’s an obvious one for me. I love spending time with my kids. I don’t see them enough. It wouldn’t be a hobby kind of thing but just to be around the kids.

What would be the one tip you would give to amateur golfers?

They shouldn’t try to look for anyone to give them all the answers. They should go out on the range, the putting green, chipping round the greens and try to play a little bit more. Try different things. I think it would be a good thing if people went to the golf course with a bit of an open mind. A lot of people are very set on formulas and you have got to swing it like this and do it like that. There is nothing you must. Therefore, a lot of it is go out there and play around with it and find your way of doing it properly.
