Masters 2016: The strangest hole-in-one in Major history?

How JB Holmes had a huge helping hand in Louis Oosthuizen's hole-in-one and Matt Fitzpatrick will be back next year

Charity begins with Holmes for Louis

We all know what happens at the 16th on Sunday at the Masters – you land it right of the pin and let the slope and gravity give you a chance of a hole-in-one.

But this has never been seen before despite there already having been two holes in one already in the day. Louis Oosthuizen’s tee shot trickled down towards the hole, so business as usual. But it then hit playing partner JB Holmes’ ball full on, diverted that just past the hole and re-routed itself into the cup.

Had the South African had the honour things might have been very different.

Lowry gets us going

First up was Shane Lowry. The Irishman made the 16th ace at the 16th hole and it came courtesy of an 8-iron from 181 yards.

“I feel pretty lucky to have a hole‑in‑one around this place, in this tournament. So, yeah, it’s nice,” Lowry said. “I’m sure I’ll get a picture somewhere and frame it in the house and it will be nice memento to have.”

And Love conquers all (at 16)

Not long after the US Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III followed Lowry in. The 51-year-old took one more club than Lowry but with the same result.

Love was playing possibly his last (and 20th) Masters having qualified by winning the Wyndham Championship last August. He has finished runner-up twice here.

Fitzpatrick back next year

Matthew Fitzpatrick booked his spot at next year’s tournament after a brilliant back nine. The Sheffield player recorded a 67 after four birdies in the last five holes.

This was the youngster’s first Major as a professional, he did play in the 2014 Masters, where he missed the cut, after winning the US Amateur.

DeChambeau leaves with honours

Bryson DeChambeau took the amateur honours and will tee it up next week as a member of the paid ranks. He had a little bit of everything this week, he even visited new territory for most of us when he snap hooked his tee shot at the 18th on Friday.

And he closed out with a birdie for a 72, total of 293 to finish five clear of France’s Romain Langasque. The Amateur champion shot 83 on Saturday but was 15 shots better thanks to four birdies in the last five holes. He finished at 10 over.

“Unfortunately there were a few things that I need to do a little bit better to take care of on our end and if we can do that, I think I’ll be right back in the thick of things. I’ve just got to keep placing myself there.”

He also revealed that his hip gave out late on Friday which led to those hooks at the last.

“I wouldn’t say that’s the full reason, but at the same time, it did affect me. It was unfortunate, but again, it’s a learning experience.”

Mark Townsend

Been watching and playing golf since the early 80s and generally still stuck in this period. Huge fan of all things Robert Rock, less so white belts. Handicap of 8, fragile mind and short game
