Is this the future of golf apparel? Nike believe they can fundamentally change what we wear on the golf course...

“I don’t feel like a golfer, I feel like an athlete,” were the words of Scott Pinckney when he first put on the new Nike MM Fly Roll Polo.

And this is very much a key message from Nike with their new range which also includes the Fly Blade and Commander Polos, Flyknitt Chukka hightops and Hyperwarm tights.

Rory McIlroy, Brooks Koepka, Tony Finau and Thorbjorn Olesen have also been among the Nike athletes showcasing this look on tour.

“When they finally let me try their prototype polo I thought, ’this is it!’ I really didn’t want to give it back,” McIlroy said of the Fly Blade.

“Anytime I can have my off-course style blend in with my on-course style, it’s a big thing for me,” Olesen added.

“The clothes we wear on the course almost become an expression of our personality.”

The tights, which might take the most convincing for the club golfer, are ideal for practice as Koepka explains: “Tights are good for recovery. We train so hard on and off the golf course that I think it would help us stay on the tour for a little longer by keeping our bodies fresh for years down the road.”

McIlroy put the Flyknitt Chukkas into play at the Northern Trust Open.

We’ve got used to seeing Nike’s athletic heritage and success from other sports transferring over to golf. The large swoosh from their Mercurial football boots features on the new Lunar Control 4 golf shoes; and Flyknitt material and Lunarlon sole technology, which we’ve seen in their running shoes, is used in the Flyknitt Chukka golf shoes.

Now it seems they are trying to break the mould in terms of style by bridging the gap between what is worn on and off the course. Hopefully these new styles will continue to phase out the ridiculous notion of strict dress codes at many of our clubs.
