Quick 9: The best of Rory McIlroy

We take a look at some of the Irishman’s greatest shots

Four-time Major winner Rory Mcllory is one of the star names in world golf.

The 26-year-old from Holywood, Northern Ireland, is one part of the so-called ’Big Three’ along with Jordan Spieth and Jason Day.

Despite sitting behind them in the world rankings, Mcllory is arguably the more established player out of the three having won four Major titles.

Here’s a quick 9 of Rory McIlroy’s best shots of his career so far.

9. 2016 Irish Open

En route to winning the 2016 Irish Open McIlroy saved his best shot till the very last hole….

8. 2016 Tour Championship

The Northern Irishman was an outside bet to win the 2016 FedEx Cup following a good play-off campaign.

McIlroy went on to win both the Tour Championship and FedEx Cup thanks to a play-off win against Ryan Moore.

Forcing a play-off was hugely down to this hole out eagle…

7. 2016 Ryder Cup

The excitement had built up before the tie had even begun. McIlroy and Reed traded blows and on the eighth hole McIlroy hit the putt of his life.

His tee shot landed at the front of the green with the flag at the back. McIlroy stepped up and holed the putt from about 40 feet sparking his “I can’t hear you” celebration.

6. 2014 Open Championship

McIlroy had just come off the 17th hole during round three of the Open Championship with a bogey. He went down the 18th 14 under par and was looking to take a healthy lead in to the final round.

When the pressure was on the Northern Irishman delivered. He set up a an eagle to take a six shot lead into the final round and went on to lift the Claret Jug.

5. 2011 Omega Mission Hills World Cup

Mcllory’s chip shot at the 10th flew into hole with little fuss. Mcllory made the attempt look like a walk in the park and the camera quickly turns to his playing partner and fellow countryman Graeme McDowell bowing in appreciation.

We’re not worthy, Rory. We’re not worthy!

4. 2012 Deutsche Bank Championship

This shot at the 6th hole is as close as you can come to perfection when attacking the pin.

Mcllory almost scoffs at the potentially troublesome water hazard close by and pings the ball to within just inches of the hole.

Gutsy stuff from the deserved winner of the competition in Boston.

3. 2014 Honda Classic

Mcllory led for the majority of the four days at the PGA National in Florida.

But a poor final round resulted him needing to pull off a birdie on the par-5 18th to secure a spot in a four-way play-off.

Mcllory plastered a risky 5-wood shot from 245 yards away over the water protecting half the green to set himself up for a possible eagle.

He missed the putt but his birdie forced him into a four-way play-off, which was won by Russell Henley.

However, Mcllory’s stunning shot was still a thing of beauty.

2. 2014 PGA Championship

Mcllory’s 281-yard approach shot on the par-5 10th hole at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, played a major part in him winning his fourth Major title and second PGA Championship in August 2014.

The ball skimmed across the fairway and rolled just seven feet away from the hole.

Mcllory kept his composure to sink the putt for an eagle.

He would go on to win the tournament by a single stroke over Phil Mickelson.

1. 2011 US Open

Mcllory has been quoted previously as saying that his tee shot on the par-3 10th at the US Open, played at the Congressional Country Club in Maryland, was a key moment in setting him up for his first Major crown.

His playing partner Y. E. Yang had just played a beauty of a shot to within four feet of the hole.

Undeterred, Mcllory thumped a 6-iron shot which the caught the top of the slop behind the flag. It looked like Yang had outdone Mcllory on this occasion, but then the ball started trickling past Yang’s attempt and finished just inches away from the cup.

Mcllory would go on to finish on -16, eight shots ahead of nearest rival Jason Day.

The young Irshman had delivered on the big stage.
