England Golf Week: Shropshire’s Williams is champion captain
Shropshire’s Malcolm Williams is England’s champion golf captain – claiming the title a year after he almost gave up the game.
“I was thinking about giving up because I was so bad,” said Williams, who was the 2007 captain at Worfield Golf Club.
The turning point came at the 2014 final of the England Golf Captains’ tournament when his caddy made a couple of suggestions which, he said, “made a tremendous difference to my game.”
He confirmed it today in the 2015 final at Frilford Heath Golf Club, Oxfordshire, when he added 40 points to his opening 35 and won the championship by a point.

“This means an awful lot, especially when there are so many captains taking part from all over the country,” said Williams.
“I wasn’t expecting it all. Yesterday 35 points wasn’t really anywhere, but 40 points today made a big difference,” added the 16-handicapper.
“I was just very steady, nothing dramatic, but it all seemed to come together.”
The runner-up on 74 points was Martin Wainman from Wychwood Park, Cheshire; while third place was taken by Alan Brack of Crook, Durham, who had 73 points.
The final was played as part of the new Golf Week, a five-day festival run by England Golf to celebrate team and handicap players.
