US Open 2015: Tiger cards his worst US Open round

It could have been worse... just ask Rickie Fowler

Tiger Woods endured an embarrassing opening round in the 2015 US Open at Chamber Bay as he went on to card a 10-over-par 80.

The former world number one and 14-time major winner made eight bogeys and a treble but it could have been even worse.

Playing partner Rickie Fowler was level par through five holes before going double, bogey, double, treble to reach the turn on +8.

A further five bogeys followed on the back nine and it took an eagle at the par-4 12th to keep him at +11.
I fought, I fought hard. And that was my number. I couldn’t grind out any harder than that" “At least I kicked Rickie’s butt today,” Woods joked after his round which included a horrendous top into a fairway bunker on 18.

“Not very happy, that’s for sure. It was a tough day. Got off to a bad start. I stuck that 6-iron in the ground on the first hole, and then just couldn’t quite get it turned around today,” added Woods.

“I fought, I fought hard. And that was my number. I couldn’t grind out any harder than that. So that’s just the way I played and unfortunately it was a high number today.”

There was only one player in the field worse than Woods and Fowler – American Rich Berberian Jr who finished day one on +13.

Awkward lies and bobbly greens were a feature of the opening round but Henrik Stenson and Dustin Johnson both carded 65s to lead on -5 and prove low rounds are possible.

Patrick Reed was just one shot back with Matt Kuchar, Ben Martin and amateur Brian Campbell in a tie for fourth on -3.

Jordan Spieth and Jason Day were among the players on -2 with Phil Mickelson and Colin Montgomerie a shot further back.

World number one Rory McIlroy was disappointed to card two bogeys on his final three holes to end the day on +2 and in a tie for 52nd.

“I played well from tee to green,” McIlroy said.

“I thought the course was set up fair. A score in the mid-60s was out there, as you can see with Dustin and Henrik. I thought you could be aggressive here. It’s not a game of chess. I just didn’t putt well enough.”

Woods faces an uphill battle to make the cut but has vowed to give it his best shot.

He has made a simple plan for round two. “Keep grinding,” Woods added. “Keep grinding, keep working.”
