There has been a lot of talk about the unique challenge which players will face in the 2015 US Open at Chambers Bay.

For such a new venue it is difficult to assess which players will be suited to the linksy track. Other than the 2010 US Amateur we’ve not seen tournament play at the public course near Seattle in the North West of America.

So what do we know? Some holes are very long but many of the fairways are quite generous. The greens will be undulating and fast.

US Open 2015: Tee times

It’s the US Open so will be as tough a challenge the players will face all year.

We take a look at the favourites, a few each-way tempters and assess the chances of the Englishmen in the field.

Not the longest off the tee but has the short-game imagination and putting skills to score well" The favourites

Rory McIlroy 7/1

Has missed the cut in his last two events however it still the man to beat when in top form. Bookies fear the world number one but considering his lack of form, these odds seem ungenerous.

Jordan Spieth 15/2

Not the longest off the tee but has the short-game imagination and putting skills to score well. The Masters winner will be heavily backed by the casual golf fan who have Augusta fresh in their memories.

Phil Mickelson 16/1

Found some form with a 65 in the final round of the St Jude Classic so expect odds to shorten even further at the event draws nearer. This is a great opportunity for Phil to land that elusive US Open crown.

Rickie Fowler 22/1

Has all the right ingredients to succeed at this venue and is capable of raising his game for the Majors. Form has dipped since his victory at The Players but I’d expect him to be firing on all cylinders when it really matters.

Dustin Johnson 22/1

Could take advantage of the wide fairways as isn’t always the straightest but certainly has the length. Still very streaky and a missed cut is almost as likely as a top five finish. Should be a multiple major winner by now.

Tempting each-way bets

Byeong-Hun An 75/1

Reached the semi-final of the US Amateur in 2010 which explains the short odds. Also his impressive victory at Wentworth had made people sit up and take note. A genuine talent who has underachieved in his career so far.

US Open 2015: The short history of Chambers Bay

Louis Oosthuizen 90/1

Has been threatening a return to form for a while but has missed the cut in his last two events. However, he’s links Major winner and, if injury free, is a threat.

Shane Lowry 125/1

A consistent performer who should relish this challenge. There could be some other markets which appeal here such as top European at 33/1.

The English hopefuls

Justin Rose 18/1

Seems to contend in every event he plays. More than capable of another US Open crown.

Paul Casey 66/1

Playing with a smile on his face these days but without a US win in six years.

Ian Poulter 75/1

Loves the big occasion and could be dangerous if he gets in contention.

Lee Westwood 75/1

Plenty of links success in the past but hasn’t succeeded in a stellar field for a while now

Luke Donald 80/1

Patches of decent form but nowhere near the consistency levels required to challenge the world;s best.

Danny Willett 125/1

A wonderful maiden season on the PGA Tour so far so will be full of confidence. Surprised to see odds so high for a player who looks very comfortable in elite company.

Tommy Fleetwood 175/1

A proven links winner who has being showing signs of getting back to his best. Very generous odds.

Andy Sullivan 200/1

Another Englishman who has relished the challenge of competing in the states. Great character and attitude. Top Englishman at 18/1 could be worth a look

Jason Palmer 2,000/1

Our one-handed chipper hasn’t set the world alight on the European Tour this year but has been solid. Making the cut would be a great achievement after coming through qualifying at Walton Heath.
