The Masters: Spieth moves up to World No.2

Young Texan hot on the heels of McIlroy

When Rory McIlroy won the PGA Championship at Valhalla our new Masters champion, Jordan Spieth, was in 12th spot after missing the cut.

He is now the new World No.2, replacing Henrik Stenson, at the age of just 21. McIlroy, who pulled himself up to fourth after a forgettable opening 27 holes, sits on 11.53 points while the American has 9.14.

“The ultimate goal each week is to be the number one player in the world,” the young Texan said. “I’m still behind him; still chasing that goal. But one step closer is huge. I don’t expect to change the way I’m playng.”

Of the easy comparisons that are made with McIlroy he added: “He has got four Majors. That’s something I can still only dream about. I won’t hit it as far as he does and that’s something I will just have to make up. I don’t know as far as the rivalry now. I’m looking forward to getting into the heat of the moment with him a couple of times and hopefully we can battle it.”

Justin Rose, who tied for second with Phil Mickelson, is back in the top 10 in eighth spot following his disappointing start to the season and Mickelson climbs four places to 18th.

Tiger Woods came into Augusta down in 111th, his lowest position for 20 years, and he moved up 10 spots after surprising most of us with his top-20 finish. His tie for 17th was his best Major effort since his sixth place at Muirfield in 2013.

Been watching and playing golf since the early 80s and generally still stuck in this period. Huge fan of all things Robert Rock, less so white belts. Handicap of 8, fragile mind and short game
