Wales: Celebrities line up for Celtic Manor cup

Vernon Kay and Ronan Keating sign up for event

Vernon Kay and Ronan Keating will be among the celebrities lining up on opposing teams when they take part in the Celebrity Cup at Celtic Manor from July 4-5.

TV presenter Kay will make his debut for the England team which won the cup last summer.

He said: “I’m really looking forward to playing in the Celebrity Cup for the first time this summer. I love my golf and I’ve heard some great things from some of the other guys who have competed before, about what a fun time they always have at this event.

“Lets hope we can keep the celebrity cup in English hands again this year and raise a lot of money for the Caron Keating Foundation while we’re at it.”

Boyzone singer Ronan Keating has announced he will be on the Irish team after getting a taste of the action last year.
‘I’ve heard some great things from the guys who have competed before’ Keating will team up with his bandmate Keith Duffy, former Westlife singer Brian McFadden and television presenter Brian Ormond, who played in the inaugural tournament in 2013.

In the England team, Kay is joined by Rugby World Cup winner Mike Tindall and Dragons’ Den entrepreneur Peter Jones, who have both competed in the event for the last two years.

Hollywood actor Dougray Scott is another returning player and he will line up with football legends Kenny Dalglish, Alan Hansen and Gordon Strachan.

For Wales, television stars Rob Brydon, Philip Glenister and Gethin Jones will spearhead the home challenge in the round-robin format of nine-hole matches on Celtic Manor’s Roman Road course, culminating in a grand final on Sunday afternoon.

With teams each comprising of six golfers, more celebrities are expected to sign up for the event, which is open to the public.

Last year, thousands of golf fans and celebrity spotters visited Celtic Manor in the sunshine to watch England gain revenge over 2013 champions Scotland in the final.

There will also be Q&A interviews with other sports stars and live music in the tented village.
