South West: Finals day at Perranporth

CGU Frank Wills Trophy and CAW Cornish Bowl see wins for St Enodoc and Trethorne

The finals of both the CGU Frank Wills Trophy and the CAW Cornish Bowl took place at Perranporth on March 2, with St Enodoc and Trethorne taking the top spots.

St Enodoc won the Frank Wills after defeating St Austell 3-2 in a 36-hole final on what was a difficult playing day over the James Braid-designed cliff top course, with winds gusting up to 54mph.

Cornwall Golf Union secretary Chris Pountney said: “The day started dry and sunny but with everyone aware rain was in the forecast for the post lunch period, everyone had their fingers crossed and, certainly in the Wills match, a quick pace of play ensued. However, the rain stayed away with blue skies and sunshine providing a welcome comfort in what were still difficult and biting winds.”

‘The rain stayed away with sunshine providing a welcome comfort’ The Cornish Bowl winners for the third time in 10 years are Trethorne, who defeated China Fleet in what was the battle of East Cornwall.

The deciding match went to the 18th hole after both clubs had recorded two individual match wins.

The final match was played between China Fleet’s Andy Hatch and James Stroud and the Trethorne pair of John Grainger and Gary Shirley. Tying the game on the 17th, Trethorne came up short on the 18th hole after two, while China Fleet flew the green. Unable to get up and down, the China Fleet pairing were forced to concede the hole, and the trophy.

St Enodoc team captain Bob Cruse was presented with the Frank Wills Trophy, while Trethorne captain Chris Eyles received the Cornish Bowl from CGU president David Inch.
