Driver test results: Cobra Fly-Z+ video review

Driver test results: Cobra Fly-Z+ video review

A real box of tricks that delivers on style and performance

First impressions: This was a particularly exciting launch for Cobra as they had introduced a new take on adjustably with the FlipZone weighting on the sole.

In fact, this is one of the most adjustable drivers out there which is pretty impressive. This is a company who often divide opinion because their colours are a bit bright but don’t get the credit they deserve for making very technologically advance gear.

There are four colour options in the Fly-Z+ – orange, blue, white and black – so there’s something even for the traditionalists.

What they say: The FlipZone is Cobra’s first front-to-back CG adjustable technology that features a 15-gram weight that can be set toward the front or back of the head located low on the sole of the driver.

The front CG position provides a mid-launch angle with ultra-low spin and a penetrating ball flight with more roll, while the back CG position delivers a mid-launch angle with 400 RPM’s of additional spin, resulting in a towering ball flight, maximum distance with more carry.

The Fly-Z+ driver also features speed channel technology, which is an engineered trench around the perimeter of the face that works to minimize thickness, resulting in increased ball speeds across the face for incredible distance and more forgiveness.

NCG verdict: The FlipZone is a really unique piece of kit and you can easily see the difference in ball flight from moving the weight forward or back.

Again, it’s probably best for a custom-fitter to decide which is best for you as a stock option but there’s nothing wrong with having a play around if you are looking for a different ball flight for a particular course or conditions.

The sound off the face is slightly higher pitched than some drivers on test but the looks and performance are really good.

Some people maybe put off by an Orange head, like the one I was testing, but once you get used to it there’s no reason why you shouldn’t be able to get on with this driver.

The shafts seemed a little generous to me to you may need to go up a flex.

I really like the head shape and with this level of adjustability on offer, Cobra have unleashed another really cool driver here.
