J.B. Holmes extended his lead at the top of the WGC-Cadillac to five shots on another breezy day at Trump National at Doral with a round of 69 which included a hole-in-one at the par-3 4th.
Fellow American Dustin Johnson achieved the feat earlier in the day at the same hole on his way to a 69 to head into Sunday tied second with Bubba Watson on -6.
On his hole-in-one, Johnson said: “I wasn’t aiming right at the flag; I pushed it just a hair but it was still a really good shot and I was lucky it went in.
“I really played well all day today, I just didn’t roll the putter that great.”
Holmes had a slow start to the day, three-putting from inside six feet to make bogey at the par five 1st, but more than made up for it with an ace at the 4th and making four birdies at 14, 15, 16 and 17 to finish -11.
Also in contention is Henrik Stenson: “I was struggling off the tee, was out of position a lot of times but got it back in position, so all in all, maybe feel I underachieved by a shot or two.”
Adam Scott, making his first appearance since November following the birth of his daughter last month, quickly moved to -7 before dropping four shots in five holes.
The Australian eventually finished with a round of 75, eight back from Holmes.
World Number One Rory McIlroy failed to break 70 for the third time this week, making four birdies and four bogeys on his way to a 72, tied with reigning champion Patrick Reed on -1.
