As you may remember, my 10-week run of lessons with Scott Oxley at J Whitaker Golf came to an end just in time for me heading out to the PGA Show in Orlando.

We spent the 10th lesson looking at my driving after feeling it was the main area causing me headaches.

Hitting my opening tee-shot at PGA National (home of the Honda Classic) out of bounds wasn’t the start I was hoping for but for the rest of the trip my driving was fairly solid.

We also played on the Fazio course at PGA National, Grande Pines and Champions Gate.

On the whole I was reasonably pleased with how I performed on tough Florida golf courses in the company of single-figure handicappers.

I continued to play off the 18 handicap which I had been using prior to my trip but due to the various matchplay and fourball formats I was never actually afforded this many shots.

This didn’t bother me too much and has made me look forward to playing on my home course at Moor Allerton with a shot every single hole.
I’m determined to get my game into decent shape ahead of the upcoming golf season” So I returned from America feeling positive about my game but in no doubt that I need to work hard in my practise to keep improving.

Short-game was one area where I feel I ‘wasted’ far too many shots. The odd wayward tee shot is understandable and I don’t expect to be peppering the pin with all my mid-irons.

I don’t think there is any excuse for duffing a 30/40 yard pitch or a little chip from around the green. If I can tidy up this area of my game then I will certainly knock shots off a round.

So I took my faded sun tan back to Moor Allerton for a short-game session with Scott.

I’m determined to get my game into decent shape ahead of the upcoming golf season.

Oh, and I’ve also got to play in the Pro-Am at the European Tour’s Madeira Island’s Open next month so don’t want to show myself up.
