What our panellists said:
AL: England’s best course – and it’s not close.
MM: Classic links, towering dunes in places.
KE: One of the best, if not the best, of the Open venues. Tough and scenic.
CC: Good but somewhat quirky in places.
Commentary: Royal St George’s is not always loved by the top pros (who prefer straight bounces and even stances) or visitors to the Open (getting in and out of this medieval town can be a trial) but we were concerned with neither of those elements here.
On a grand scale, Sandwich combines great views and dramatic linksland with some outrageous greens and precise bunkering.
It’s also fun – an element and theme of what makes a great course that our panel have repeatedly come back to. There are so many highlights to a round here and that, ultimately, is what lifted it narrowly above Birkdale.
