Dustin Johnson to miss the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles
America’s Dustin Johnson will miss the Ryder Cup after announcing he will take a break from the game to overcome “personal challenges”.
In a statement released by his management company the 30-year-old confirmed he will miss the US PGA Championship at Valhalla next week as well as the Ryder Cup in Gleneagles next month.
“I will use this time to seek professional help for personal challenges I have faced,” Johnson said.
“By committing the time and resources necessary to improve my mental health, physical well-being and emotional foundation, I am confident that I will be better equipped to fulfil my potential and become a consistent champion.
“I respectfully ask my fans, well-wishers and the media for privacy as I embark upon this mission of self-improvement.”
Johnson, currently fifth in the USA Ryder Cup points list was a certainty to make Tom Watson’s team but his omission could pave the way for Phil Mickelson to qualify automatically.
“We will certainly miss Dustin Johnson at Gleneagles, and we wish him the best" Mickelson is currently in 11th place on the list, one behind Patrick Reed, with the 10th spot now qualifying automatically.
“We will certainly miss Dustin Johnson at Gleneagles, and we wish him the best,” the US captain, Tom Watson, said.
“As one of the longest hitters in the game with an undefeated record of 3-0 at Medinah in 2012, he has clearly been an asset for the United States team. That said, the United States is a team with an abundance of talent.”
The European Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley, gave his comments on the issue while working on the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational for Sky Sports.
“It’s much better for everyone if there is clarity,” he said.
“If something has gone wrong and he has been misbehaving, let’s put it out on the table and get it dealt with and move forward.”
